When asked by his barber and good friend, Peter Beskendorf, for some practical guidance on how to prepare oneself for prayer, Martin Luther responded by writing this brief treatise first published in 1535. A Simple Way to Pray is a fresh modern translation bringing us Luther's practical instruction, using Luther's I.T.C.P. (Instruction. Thanksgiving. Confession. Prayer) method of prayer. This method anchors prayer in the catechism or other biblical texts, but allows the Holy Spirit to prompt thoughts via the Word, which may be chased more freely by the mind at prayer.

Instruction Lord Christ, You instruct me here that I am to listen carefully and heed the word of my pastor when he speaks Your Word. The pastoral office is profound; my pastor is not only charged to watch over my soul, but You also call him to account for his service to me. Finally, You tell me in this text that I am to be a joy to my pastor and not a pain, and this for my own spiritual benefit.

Thanksgiving Jesus, I thank You for my pastor. In fact, I thank You for the pastor who baptized me, and all pastors who have served me in my life as a Christian. Thank You for all the sermons that have clearly shown me my sin and delivered to me the free forgiveness of the Gospel because of Your sacrifice for me on the cross.

Confession Lord, I confess that so often I fail to pray for my pastor. I fail to be gracious to his family. I do not pay attention to his preaching. I have gossiped and failed to love and defend him and put the best construction on everything. I deserve to have my faithful pastor taken away. Forgive me my many sins, and help me to do better. Help me especially to be a joy to my pastor and to encourage him in his difficult office.

Prayer Savior, bless my pastor with faithfulness to Your Word. Cause him to grow in knowledge of Your Word. Give him courage and strength for his tasks. I thank You for (name) and for all faithful pastors. Grant success to the work of our seminaries. Bless our professors and students. And give my pastor joy. I ask all this for Your sake alone. Amen.

A Simple Way to Pray Martin Luther Matthew Harrison 9780758640338 Books

A Simple Way to Pray offers practical guidance on how to prepare for prayer, how to conduct prayer properly, and what role prayer plays in the life of a believer. It was written by the Father of the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther, and the pearls of wisdom in this book have stood the test of time. A Simple Way to Pray is Biblically sound and the advice in this book comes from a man so strong in his faith that he stood tall for Christ in the midst of perilous times and monstrous adversity. Hence, Luther is someone worth listening to.

Luther begins by describing “pre-prayer” or getting himself in the right frame of mind before communicating with The Lord. He then applies his prayer algorithm using The Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments and the Apostle’s Creed. The algorithm follows the I.T.C.P. format which stands for Instruction, Thanksgiving, Confession and Prayer. Instruction means reflecting on what the Bible tells you to do and touches upon adoration; Thanksgiving and Confession are self-explanatory, and Prayer refers to making petitions to God.

The only reservation I have about this book is that it relies on the abridged Roman Catholic Ten Commandments, which strikes out Commandment Two (no idolatry) and converts Commandment Ten (do not covet) into two separate commandments.

This book is small but packs a very clear and precise punch that will benefit any Christian who seeks to grow in the prayer life. Certainly you will walk away with a novel understanding of the utility and the power of prayer. A Simple Way to Pray is applicable to all believers and is so short (31 pages) you can get through it in one sitting.

A Simple Way to Pray Martin Luther Matthew Harrison 9780758640338 Books Reviews

It says it all - A Simple way to pray. Using the basics of a catechism, Luther gives us a way to pray through the 10 commandments, The Lord’s Prayer and the Apostles Creed. This is a good intro to a simple yet profound prayer discipline.
A Simple Way to Pray, translated by LCMS president Matthew Harrison, is a "must have" volume for all Christians. I recommend that every church purchase copies and distribute them to the congregation. Then the pastor should spend time reviewing the entire volume as a "back to the basics" study on prayer. Even if you are not Lutheran, you will find this a useful guide to prayer using the Lord's Prayer, Ten Commandments and Apostle's Creed as its basis. It's a "simple" guide that, lead by the Holy Spirit, will lead the reader to new understanding of the use and power of prayer.
This is a most excellent and easy read for those who really want to learn how to pray biblically but do not want to get bogged down in the methods of such! It is amazing how simple this work is and yet it is very profound in its effect! I am a biblical counselor and I will be using this with EVERY counselee. What better way to learn to THINK - something that is sorely lacking in the church today!
Sometimes prayer flows from your heart without any prompting. Sometimes pouring out your soul to God is no task at all. Yet, other times, when the soul is parched from lack of prayer or weary with the weights of the world, you need a little help coming to the throne of God.

That is ultimately the role of the Holy Spirit. However, Luther helps in the process by giving "a simple way to pray." Highly recommended for any believer.
In the past, I have always struggled to pray. Mainly because I wasn't sure how. This book gives a clear way to begin. The instructions and suggestions are timeless.
Next to Grace, The Word and Sacrament, prayer is the next important tool in a Christian's life to gain spiritual strength, give thanks or maintain faith within this broken world. Some believe the simplest way to pray is by memorized verse repetitively said. Others, that an individual's free flowing, controlled-focus-thought is the simplest way. Do you believe that you need guidance in growing your relationship with God through prayer? This little book, written by a world renowned Christian and translated from its German root, was an easy read, interesting, helped to organize my form of daily prayer and decrease distraction.
While I do pray, I would love to know and learn how our faithful church leaders thought about their own prayer life. This small book outlined a perfect but organized way that Martin Luther systematically set up his way of praying. I would not have thought to have included his three main basis of our faith but it all makes sense. It will help me in my doubts and directions going forward as I reference his technique and shortcuts so to speak in completing my daily prayers.
